Olympic torch sale 'looks like a hoax'

AN Olympic torchbearer who sold her piece of history for more than £150,000 on eBay was still waiting for the winning bidder to come forward last night.

Sarah Milner Simonds, 38, from Burnham- on-Sea, sold the torch on Sunday, the night before she carried it on her leg of the 8,000-mile relay event.

She planned to use the money to secure the future of People's Plot, a community gardening project she has worked for.

But since the online auction ended the winning bidder, who offered £153,100 for the torch, has not made contact – leading Ms Milner Simonds to believe it was a hoax, although the bid came from a legitimate account on the auction site.

She has already been asked to pay the £15,000 cut due to eBay.

"I am absolutely devastated," she told the Post. "Bidding and winning a lot on eBay results in a legally binding contract, but the bidder still hasn't been in touch despite repeated attempts.

"When I put it on eBay I had hundreds of rude and hateful messages sent to me, and some of the bids made were obviously false. I was hoping this one was real but I now believe it was fraudulent."
