Bristol Rovers: I don't think the season is petering out, insists Matt Harrold

Striker Matt Harrold is expecting manager Mark McGhee to pull out all the stops in an attempt to prevent Bristol Rovers' season ending in disappointing fashion.

The Pirates secured mathematical safety, despite picking up only a point from two games over a disappointing Easter weekend.

Rovers, however, suffered the heaviest setback of McGhee's 16 games in charge following the 3-0 defeat at Crewe on Monday.

The manager admitted that the season was in danger of "petering out" following the Gresty Road reverse – but Harrold, pictured, knows McGhee will push the players to the limit this week in a bid to maintain the high standards they had set themselves prior to Monday's setback.

Harrold said: "I don't think the season is petering out as such and I wouldn't say that was the reason we lost at Crewe on Monday. We were just beaten by a better team on the day.

"I can only speak for myself, but my mindset isn't one of just trying to get through the games until the end of the season and I don't think we are like that as a squad.

"Perhaps it can creep into your head sub-consciously that the team hasn't got anything to play for, but we all know the manager will be on to us over the next few days about our standards.

"There is obviously personal pride and individual goals to play for. I'd also like to enjoy the next few games because I didn't find Monday enjoyable at all."

A chance at redemption comes at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday when Burton Albion are the visitors for a match in which Rovers will be looking to extend their recent unbeaten home record to nine games.

"At the start of the season we couldn't do a thing at home and there was a lot of pressure on every game," said Harrold.

"It has been a lot easier at the Memorial Stadium recently because the crowd has been behind us because we have been winning games.

"It is important we do better than we did on Monday otherwise they won't stay behind us for long. We're all looking forward to get the chance to put things right because none of us felt like we did ourselves justice.

"We want to bounce back quickly because as a team you never want to lose two on the trot."

He added: "We've talked about what happened on Monday and where we think we went wrong.

"It was disappointing to go behind so early in the game. We didn't start well and that set the tone for the afternoon really."
