TRAFFIC came to a standstill in the city centre after a pedestrian was knocked down by a car.

At 12.50pm yesterday a man in his 70s was knocked down by a vehicle and needed to be taken to hospital. Emergency services went to the incident, which occurred at a pedestrian crossing on St Augustine's Parade outside Bristol Hippodrome.

A police spokesman said: "The man was injured in the collision but his injuries are not thought to be life- threatening or life-changing."

Police closed parts of the road following the crash. Sergeant Dave Russell of Avon and Somerset Police said: "There was a road traffic collision involving one man and one vehicle. The scene of the accident has been cordoned off in case further examination of the area needs to take place. The man's injuries are not thought to be serious."
